Rock 'n Roll High School

Survey swiped from Measi. Thanks, Measi!

High School Madness!

1. Who was your best friend?

Whom I actually went to school with? I, uh, didn't really have many friends. It's funny that Rae, who was in the same graduating class as me and is like a sister to me now, was just a casual buddy in high school, at least until senior year. But the few friends I did have in my life all went to other schools.

2. What sports did you play?

Um. I was a league bowler, but school sports? None. I did love me a HS football game, but as an enthusiastic spectator only.

3. What kind of car did you drive?

I rode the bus until I got my license at 18, and then I inherited the 1979 AMC Concord, which was the family car until we got the 1986 Dodge Colt. Laugh at the Concord if you want, but that was a smooth ride.

4. It’s Friday night. Where are you?

High school football games during the fall, and the rest of the time, I was either home reading or I was at the bowling alley.

5. Were you a party animal?

Ha! Hahahaha! No.

6. Were you considered a flirt?

I think if there was anything exactly opposite of a flirt, I'd be considered that.

7. Ever skip school?

Not until senior year, and then I took a few liberties with end-of-the-day rallies and such. The great thing about being the good girl was that, when I did finally break a few rules, they were more apt to think that their attendance program screwed up rather than me actually cutting class.

8. Ever smoke?

Nope. Never had the urge. Still don't.

9. Were you a nerd?

Holy Vulcans, yes. I think I spent more time in the library than the rest of my graduating class combined.

10. Did you get suspended/expelled?

Absolutely not. See above, re: good girl.

11. Can you sing the Alma Mater?

No.

12. Who was your favorite teacher?

I had a lot of teachers I liked, for a lot of different reasons. My senior physics teacher was a brilliant and kind man, my junior literature teacher was a strong, intelligent woman, my freshman/sophomore PE teacher knew I was doing my best, even though I was as far from athletic as you could possibly get, and he respected my efforts, and my junior history teacher inspired me to speak up and think for myself. Those are the ones I usually think of when I reflect back on my HS teachers.

13. Favorite class?

All of them. Well, except geometry, which was a struggle. But I loved school, and I loved the fact that I was such a giant nerd.

14. School mascot?

Greyhound.

15. If you could go back and do it over again, would you?

Hell. No. No! I could espouse some claptrap about "building character" and "made me the person I am today" but... No! Contrary to popular belief, I'm not a frickin' masochist.

16. What do you remember most about graduation?

The way the twilight looked as the ceremony ended. One of the Japanese exchange students gave me a big hug. I got my picture taken with a guy I had a massive crush on for, like, 6 years because the two of us won the same scholarship. I still have that picture.

17. Were you 18?

Yes – my birthday's in January.

18. Favorite memory of your Senior year?

You mean besides the end of high school? I'm not sure. I don't have many non-painful memories of those four years. It may have something to do with chorus, because as long as I'm singing, I'm generally happy.

19. Were you ever posted up on the Senior Wall?

We didn't have one of these, I don't think.

20. Did you have a job your senior year?

Yes. I worked at the local bowling alley on the weekends, and some evenings.

21. Who did you date?

Um... yeah. Not so much with this, until I was, like... 23. I did go to three dances my senior year, and the two I went to with actual boy dates really sucked hard. The third dance, I went with a bunch of other girls and that one was pretty awesome.

22. Where did you go most often for lunch?

I brought my lunch almost every day, so I'd just sit out on the grass or in the cafeteria, or Senior Court, when I was a senior.

23. What did you do after graduation?

After the ceremony, I was part of a group that went out to dinner. And then, that summer was working full time at the bowling alley and getting ready for college in the fall.

24. When did you graduate?

1989.
