For The World is Hollow and Yes This Entry Mentions Star Trek

Your Quirk Factor: 71%

You're so quirky, it's hard for you to tell the difference between quirky and normal.

No doubt about it, there's little about you that's "normal" or "average."

How Quirky Are You?

Here's a bit of advance warning -- this entry will jump around like a flea on a hotplate. It's been a long week, in more ways than one, I'm running on about 3 hours of sleep, and I have sitting beside me a small pile of chocolates and a glass of homemade wine punch. Oh, yes. That's *exactly* what kind of week it has been.

"Homemade wine punch, you say? How do you make wine punch?" Well, this is how *I* make it --

one can fruity or lemon-lime soda (I use diet grapefruit)

wine of any sort, preferably something you'd drink straight (no nasty-ass cooking sherry, and probably not $50/bottle imported port)

glass, and ice cubes

Pour wine in glass. Pour soda over wine. Add ice cubes. Ta da! Wine punch.

And what's on the tv, currently, you ask? Why, it's TV Land's Star Trek 40th anniversary deal. They're playing a small marathon of original ST episodes -- "The City on the Edge of Forever" is the current selection. Captain Kirk is currently looking all manly in his 1960's Earth-khakis and red-and-black plaid shirt, and overemoting over Joan Collins' Edith Keeler. Man, this was a groundbreaking episode of its time. Sad, too.

Though I haven't bought into the last two Star Trek tv franchises (Voyager left me cold, and I just couldn't get into Enterprise), I've been a trek fan for decades. I got hooked on ST: The Next Generation in 1987, and I've had soft spots for the Roddenberry-inspired universe ever since. Deep Space Nine is definitely my favorite of the affiliated series, though I love TNG and the originals. Hence, why the tv is parked where it is.

Yes, I've been to conventions. I love sci-fi cons, honestly. They usually have some of the best merchandise dealers, and you can get stuff at cons that you can't find elsewhere (other than Ebay). But, also, there's that cameraderie where you can look around and smile, and know that every person there loves Star Trek (or Star Wars, or Buffy, or X-Files, or whatever -- I enjoy all of the above) as much as you do.

I've never dressed up, but not because I think it's too nerdy. If you've been reading this site for very long, then you already know that I openly embrace my nerdiness and also give it wet, sloppy kisses on the cheek. I love being a nerd. I've never dressed up because I know I could never come up with a get-up as cool as some of the ones I've seen, and I'm intimidated, if anything.

And, as an aside? The William Shatner roast they showed on Comedy Central? Sad. A bunch of silly comedians trash-talking each other, and making fun of George Takei's orientation... not my idea of amusing.

Anyhow. For those of you following along at home, chocolate + wine punch + Star Trek = comfort cocktail.

Speaking of comfort, how about that opening NFL match-up last night, eh? As I told many of my coworkers today, it wasn't the prettiest game I've ever seen, but I'll take it. I heart Troy, 4-evah, with little stars and flowers doodled around the border. And Joey, too. I heart that they hit like steam-rollers, solidly and without deviating from their paths as they mow right over the top of their targets. Plus, random ball snatches are the sweetest sort of icing. Now, I just want Big Ben back at the helm, and healthy enough to throw a pass without ripping out stitches.
