The Funny Takes A, Um, Holiday
*Here's* something about the holidays that I don't much enjoy -- holiday movies. Yikes. I'm not quite sure what it is. It's not exactly that I don't like sappy stuff, because I do, when I'm in the mood for it. And I love funny movies, of course. Who doesn't? However, I'd be hard-pressed to think of a "funny" holiday movie that I would actually call funny. Some of the funniest holiday scenes, in a movie that I like, would be the ones in "Better Off Dead", but that's not what most people would call a holiday movie.
Is this making any sense at all? Probably not.
My mom, for example, loves a wide range of holiday movies. "Miracle on 34th Street" is one of her all-time favorites. I? Can't make myself sit through it. I just can't. And all the TV movies currently on cable channels like Hallmark and Lifetime? Mom eats up with a fork. I? Want to run screaming.
And the funny ones? Again... "A Christmas Story" is mildly amusing, maybe cute on a good day, but not all that funny to me.
"Jingle All The Way"? Not funny.
"Scrooged"? Not funny.
"Santa Clause"? Really not funny.
"Bad Santa"? Might have been funny, but it tries too hard, and is therefore not funny.
The only part of "Home for the Holidays" that's funny? The part in the beginning where the cat hawks up a giant hairball. I laugh my ass off at that part, the couple of times I've seen it on cable. The rest? Not funny.
"Home Alone"? The only part of that one that's funny is the 10 minutes near the end when the two bumbling robbers break into the house. Very funny. The rest? Booo-ring. And stupid. And also? Mac's not that cute, even as a 7 (-ish) year old.
The newest attempt, "Deck the Halls"? Looks incredibly not funny, and has been getting horrible, horrible reviews. So, we can throw that one on the trash pile.
Anyhow. There's never anything good on tv anyway, but this time of year, it's a million times worse. Because they fill up the available air time with the same not funny, sappy plot for, like, 4897873 hours straight.
Thank the gods for the NFL, and for DVDs. And even thank the gods for Spongebob. At least *he's* funny sometimes.
