Foofy Christmas Survey

I got this one emailed to me, and since tis the season and all, and since some of the previous holiday-related entries here have been kind of Grinch-y, I thought I'd throw this in here. If you like these sorts of meme-survey thingies, then enjoy. If not, well... too bad! Thank you, drive through!

***

1. Egg nog or hot chocolate?

Hot chocolate, absolutely. Not only do I love hot chocolate, in and of itself, but egg nog = way nasty.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?

Wrapped, of course. I know there are some folks out there who just sit the presents under the tree unwrapped, but I can't imagine being on the giving or the receiving end of that. Presents should be wrapped. Unless it's something huge or obnoxiously shaped, like a car or a bicycle or something. Then, a large bow will suffice.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?

Small colored lights on the tree, some blinking, some not. On houses, it depends. I know they're old school, but I like the big colored lights for outdoor decoration. But white lights can be nice, too.

4. Do you hang mistletoe?

No. Growing up, my dad always referred to it as a poisonous parasite. And it never really made sense to me anyway, to hang up a dead plant in a doorway so you could ambush someone and kiss them under the dead plant. What's that about, anyway?

5. When do you put your decorations up?

There's no set time, but it's usually around the second week of December and the tree stays up until the middle of January, usually.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?

Grandma's cornbread stuffing. Especially the pieces that stick to the pan and get all burnt and chewy, and have to be peeled out with a butter knife. Oh, that's good stuff.

7. Favorite holiday memory as a child:

I have tons of these. Decorating the tree with my family, my brother giving me crap, as he does every year, for absolutely covering the tree in ornaments. Christmas Eve at my grandparents' house. Watching my family and friends open the presents I bought or made for them. Listening to Christmas music. There's a million more.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?

You know, I don't know. It wasn't some massive traumatic experience. One day, I believed in Santa, and the next day, I knew that Santa was really my folks. Though, I continued to write letters to "Santa" anyway, because I figured that, whoever was providing the presents, if they wanted help with the selection, I could see my way clear to do that. You know, since I was getting cool stuff and all.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?

We go over to my grandma's house and have our Christmas with her and my extended family on Christmas Eve. When Grandpa was still alive, it was my grandparents' anniversary, too. I suppose it still is.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree?

Artificial tree, with lights on first, then silver garland, then ornaments that we've collected or made over the years. I love the patchwork feel of it, the history. No matchy-matchy stuff.

11. Snow! Love it or dread it?

There's a reason Dante's Satan is encased in ice, you know. And I'll bet there's snow there, too.

12. Can you ice skate? Yes! Not very well, but I like to do it.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift?

There's no way on earth I could narrow it down to one.

14. What’s the most important thing about the holidays for you?

Time with family and friends, and the opportunity to buy or make gifts for everyone. I love giving gifts, and I'll take any excuse I can get.

15. What is your favorite holiday dessert?

Either fudge or Grandma's carrot cake with cream cheese icing.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?

Either the tree decoration or the Christmas music.

17. What tops your tree?

We have a few different tree-tops. A couple of angels, a couple of stars, and sometimes my brother gets creative with various ornaments and makes an entire scene up on the top of the tree. One year, it involved an angel, a guitar, and Bumble from the Rudolph cartoon. He's very creative.

18. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? Giving, by far. If I had the funds, I'd buy out entire malls and give presents to strangers.

19. What is your favorite Christmas song?

This was covered a couple of entries ago.

20. Candy canes, love or hate?

Love. And they have to be peppermint. The little tiny ones are best.

21. Favorite Christmas movie?

Also covered in a previous entry, namely that I don't have a favorite Christmas movie.

22. What do you leave for Santa?

Chocolate chip cookies and milk.

23. Do you carol door to door?

I would. I have once or twice.

24. Do you wear Santa Hats in public?

Sure. I also have been known to rock some bitchin' styrofoam reindeer antlers.

25. Are wreaths part of your holiday decor?

I like wreaths, and I have a couple. One was home-made, by a girlfriend.

26. Outdoor displays, tacky or festive?

There's definitely a line that is crossed by some folks, where things were just fine and festive, and then they had to throw in some animatronic reindeer or something and jack up the whole works. Then it's just cheeseball, once the line is crossed. But I do like an artistic light display.
